Palestinian Journalists Syndicate: Our Women Journalists Are Witnesses to the Truth and Partners in Preserving the Palestinian Narrative

Ramallah — Baladna_____The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate affirmed that Palestinian women journalists are witnesses to the truth and partners in preserving the Palestinian narrative, as they continue to carry out their national and professional mission under the most difficult circumstances, despite direct targeting and grave violations they face in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

In a statement issued today, Saturday, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8, the Syndicate stated that the Palestinian woman journalist is a guardian of the Palestinian narrative and not merely a transmitter of news. Through her daily work, she documents chapters of pain and resilience and confronts dangers with determination in order to convey the truth to the world.

During the past two and a half years of what it described as a media genocide war waged by the Israeli occupation, 37 women journalists have been killed in the Gaza Strip, while 22 women journalists have been arrested by the occupation in the governorates of the West Bank and Jerusalem.

The Syndicate explained that women journalists in Palestine have been living an exceptional reality since 7 October, finding themselves caught between performing their professional duty and coping with the burdens of displacement, the loss of safety and stability, and fear for their families and children amid a devastating war that has affected both people and infrastructure.

The Syndicate added that tents in Gaza have been turned into temporary newsrooms, with women journalists continuing their work under extremely harsh humanitarian conditions, despite the loss of the most basic necessities of life and the challenges of displacement, including the absence of privacy and deprivation of basic necessities.

It further noted that women journalists in the West Bank have not been spared from targeting, amid escalating arrest campaigns against women, including journalists, as part of policies aimed at restricting press freedom and silencing the Palestinian media voice.

According to joint data issued by the Syndicate and the Palestinian Prisoners Club, the Israeli authorities have intensified arrest campaigns against women since the beginning of this year, while continuing the policy of administrative detention and targeting journalists because of their media work or their activity on social media.

The Syndicate affirmed that the Palestinian woman journalist presents an exceptional model of professional and human resilience, continuing to fulfill her mission of conveying the truth despite the grave risks, remaining a witness to the crimes and violations committed against the Palestinian people.

The Syndicate called on the international community and human rights organizations to open an independent international investigation into the violations against Palestinian journalists—both men and women—to hold those responsible accountable, and exert pressure for the immediate release of all detained journalists, especially women journalists.

It also urged international media outlets to break their silence and shed light on the suffering of Palestinian women journalists and their role in conveying the truth amid the exceptional circumstances faced by the Palestinian people.
